In our little community, our independence is an honor and something we hold dear. We blow up fireworks loud and proud and let everyone know that we are proud of our soldiers and proud that we are Americans. We know that things are not as simple as they should be and shadows of problems all over the world cause anger and issue, but in our little corner of the world……we are free to make our choices and we are proud to make them.
So, on our fourth of July we have a wonderful day of events. Our local Supreme court justice reads the Constitution. (This year I don’t believe he was able because of an illness) This is something I am really glad they decided to do. All of us need to be reminded of our roots and where we came from and why.
We have pie eating contests and watermelon eating contests. We have a wonderful parade that slithers down our two main streets and we collect candy from the fun. We aren’t huge, but we are proud and we are fun! Our mayor threw candy out of a pickup truck and our biggest feature is our fire crew. Of which we are relieved to have this year.
And at the end of the day, we all gather at our local high school football field and blow the grass to bits. The local law and council decided it was better to do that than to have fires everywhere. And with the local fire department putting on the big fireworks, it seems to be a win-win thing. We laughed, we oooo’d and awed our way through the display and when we were done….. we had enjoyed over an hour and half of wonderful fun.
